Fortuna

August 24th - 26th

Welcome back to the summer event that has been, and continues to be, Shine Thru Rain. If you haven't yet attended our little Manitoban festival, we hope to persuade you into doing so.

We are pleased to announce that for our third year we are working to bring you "Fortuna", what is shaping up to be a bigger, better, and ever-evolving festival.

Fortuna

In Roman mythology, Fortuna (equivalent to the Greek goddess Tyche), goddess of fortune, was the personification of luck, hopefully of good luck, but she could be represented veiled and blind, as modern depictions of Justice are seen, and came to represent the capriciousness of life. She is also a goddess of fate.

It is Fortuna who governs the four stages of life in the Wheel of Fortune. She is said to spin the wheel at random, changing the positions of those on the wheel - some suffer great misfortune, others gain windfalls.

The wheel characteristically has four shelves, or stages of life, with four human figures, usually labeled on the left regnabo (I shall reign), on the top regno (I reign) and is usually crowned, descending on the right regnavi (I have reigned) and the lowly figure on the bottom is marked sum sine regno (I am without reign). The wheel of fortune turns, joy turning to bitterness, and hope turning to grief.

She is also known as the "one who revolves the year" - just as the four stages in life are turned, so are the seasons.

Fortune favours the bold, Fortune favours the brave, and Fortune favours the strong are three common translations of the famous and often-quoted ancient Latin proverb "Fortuna fortes adiuvat". The phrase means that Fortuna, the Goddess of luck, is more likely to help those that take risks, take action, and develop their skills proactively.

(Most of the previous information on Fortuna and the Wheel of Fortune was pulled from Wikipedia.)

We hope to offer some inspiration with this year's theme to get people involved with setting the mood of the weekend. Involvement can range anywhere from bringing a costume, creating site art, expressing ideas, to of course simply taking in what's around you.

We are happy to be working with various artists to create a new and unique festival experience which we hope you will enjoy.
